Staff at Uber had worked on both games and their new venture was seen as a spiritual successor of sorts, pitting enormous robotic armies against one another, backed up by Commander units, supply-and-demand resource management, and base-building. The original game, Kickstarted and released last year, was trapped in the orbit of two RTS giants – Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.

Quality-wise, I regard it as somewhere between an ASCII flight simulator and an unfinished Snake clone.Announced and released today, Planetary Annihilation: Titans is an expandalone version of Uber Entertainment's Planetary Annihilation. My opinion is that it looks like ass and is no fun to play.

I don't care that it was in "3d" and you could download a hundred new units online. I don't think the same is true of TA (although I'm sure the skewed sample of this thread will of course reply with plenty of counter-examples.) You can say "zug zug" or "nuclear launch detected" or play a few seconds of Hell March and most gamers will know exactly what game featured the clip. The audio doesn't seem too special either. By the time I learned which of the ten or more units in my tech tree could fly, my opponent was attacking my turtle thing with world-ending ATAT's. Besides that, TA has you commanding dozens of units, many of which do almost the same thing, versus most other RTS's, which usually feature a small group of units with diverse applications. Regarding gameplay, my impression was that TA is about attacking a hobbling, obese, mechanical turtle ad nauseum, versus assaulting multiple bases (the theme of every RTS before or after TA, that I know of, except Homeworld). No contest in my opinion, but there's no accounting for taste. If you analyze and optimize it like what has happened to SC it will become shallow and boring to a player that can play SC on a high level, meaning being good at both mechanical execution and strategical/tactical thinking.Įvery RTS I have played I can only play for a few days or weeks at most, after that I become bored by the simplicity. TA is a fun game, but it only offers "casual depth". Once you understand and can execute the mechanical/technical aspect of SC it is unrivaled in pretty much all non-turnbased videogames when it comes to how advanced it is. This is why it's so incredibly hard and unforgiving. You could say that mechanics/technique is a prerequisite to enable the very advanced tactical and strategical aspect of SC. But tactical thinking is also very important. Execution of strategy is a vital skill yes. Thinking SC is about pure technique/mechanics is a common misconception. Watch any high level TvT involving dropships. But it's really all about positioning and tactical maneuvering. TvT is the best example, it looks on surface to someone who doesn't understand the game to be about mechanics. Can you show me where this is not the case?
